Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
Our EMs bring Holy Communion to the sick and shut-ins on Sunday and help with the distribution of the Eucharist within Mass. If you have a love for the Holy Eucharist and a heart for the sick and elderly, you are a good candidate! Get over the fact that you are not “worthy” of this ministry – no one is. No one is worthy to be a priest, either, but Jesus makes his servants worthy by his Precious Blood. Saint Paul said, “I am not worthy to be called an apostle” but he put himself forward, anyway, because Jesus called him (I Cor. 15,9). Please consider whether he might be calling you to do this ministry.
Time commitment: Our goal is for each Extraordinary Minister to serve once every two or three weeks at one weekend Mass, with a visit to the sick and shut-ins after the 8 a.m. or 10 a.m. Mass once a month. The visits after Mass might take up to an hour.
Training: If you are interested, please contact Father Scott at [email protected] and plan on participating in formation for this ministry on Saturday, June 3 at 9:30 a.m. in the Parish Life Center.
Sacristans
The men and women in this ministry do the “leg work” of setting up for a Mass on the weekend or holy day of obligation. They prepare the chalices and the vessels which will hold the Hosts for the Communion Rite and make sure that everything that will be needed for the celebration is in its proper place. After Mass, they put everything back. They also help with taking up the collection and organizing the presentation of the bread and wine to the celebrant.
Time commitment: Our goal is for sacristans to be scheduled twice a month. Sacristans are asked to arrive twenty minutes before Mass. It usually takes ten or fifteen minutes after Mass to clean up.
Training: You will be pared with an experienced sacristan for on the job training. A checklist of what to do is provided so you do not have to be afraid of forgetting the details! If you are interested, please contact [email protected].
Greeters
This friendly group of parishioners helps people to feel welcome when they come to our church. They are especially attentive to newcomers and persons requiring assistance. They may also help with the collection and presentation of the bread and wine to the celebrant.
Time commitment: Greeters are asked to arrive twenty minutes before Mass and stay after Mass to hand out the bulletins and wish people well as they head towards their cars.
Training: An experienced greeter will orient you. Our goal is to have two or three greeters at every Mass. If you are interested, please contact Jennifer Hoffman at [email protected].
Please get involved in one of these or other ministries of ABVM as you are able! Father Scott
Thanks John!
